Whisky

The Scotch Whisky Association recognises five whisky-making regions in Scotland:

Speyside in the North-East has the greatest concentration of distilleries in Scotland, including Glenfiddich, Strathisla, Glenfarclas and Linkwoood. Extremely popular around the world, Speyside whiskies generally fall into two types: fruity, light, easy-going whiskies, and darker, intense, sweet malts.

The huge Highland region surrounds Speyside and offers an equally huge range, from rich, spicy, complex Dalmore near Inverness, to gentle and grassy Royal Lochnagar (a stone’s throw from Balmoral) and the tiny, briney, Oban distillery on the South-West coast. Officially, the Islands of Lewis, Harris, Jura, Skye, Mull and Orkney all fall into the Highland classification, though any attempt to group their infinitely varied whiskies must be purely geographic.

Islay is famous for its strongly-flavoured smoky, peaty, medicinal single malts. The island's eight distilleries (including Caol Isla, Port Ellen, Ardberg and Laphroaig) all have their own distinct identities and idiosyncracies, with salty flavours of seaweed, kippers, and even iodine!

The Campbeltown region in the South-West saw its distillery numbers decline drastically in the 20th century, due to the First and Second World Wars and Prohibition laws. However the surviving producers, such as Springbank, continue to make distinctive, characterful whiskies with flavours of white fruits, fudge, toffee, smoke and oil.

While the large Lowland region also suffered from decline in the 20th century and is now more synonymous with blends than single malts, it still produces excellent whiskies that are gentler, creamier and more easy-drinking than their Islay and Campbeltown neighbours.
