The Loire Valley is France's third largest Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, behind Bordeaux and the Rhône Valley. Over the past 50 years this hugely diverse area has been overlooked by traditional consumers, even though the area was once considered by the English and French to be better than a lot of Bordeaux. In fact, it continues to produce some of the most interesting and diverse wine styles in France. The Loire boasts over 87 AOC's, producing red, white, rosé and sparkling wines from a huge variety of terroirs, micro-climates, grapes and traditions. Due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Loire River, it is common that the wines of the Loire are best matched with seafood - even the reds.
