A family owned company, Bollinger was established in 1839 by Jacques Joseph Placide Bollinger and his partners Paul Renaudin and Count Athanase de Villermont. Later, Bollinger’s iconic leader was Mme Lily Bollinger, affectionately known as ‘tante Lily’, who headed the Champagne house from 1941 until her passing in 1977.
One of Lily’s most famous statements about Bollinger is still quoted today, "I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry ...
France's most northernmost wine producing region is Champagne, which is without doubt, the source of the world's most celebrated, sparkling wine. The town from which Champagne takes its name is only 90 miles north-east of Paris. The cooler climate, combined with the areas limestone soils, give Champagne its freshness, delicacy, and rich complexity.
