A freak, the 2000 Pingus is an exaggerated, extravagantly rich effort boasting an inky/purple colour along with a sumptuous perfume of beef blood, lavender, Provencal herbs, ground pepper, melted liquorice, and oodles of blackberry and creme de cassis-like fruit. Full-bodied, powerful, rich, and smoky, with great intensity, and an unctuously-textured, full-throttle finish, it should drink well for 15-20 years.
Dominio de Pingus
Pingus is a relatively new, yet hugely successful, winery established in 1995 by the Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck. Situated in the Ribera del Duero region of northern Spain, the wines are made entirely from old-vine Tempranillo (known locally as Tinto Fino) which is grown on three separate plots.
Having already made a name for himself as winemaker at Hacienda Monasterio, Sisseck's aim is to produce wines that are distinctly Spanish and true to the local history and environment. The wines are 100% organic and, since 2000, have also been farmed biodynamically.
Ribera Del Duero
Located in the northern plateau of Spain, Ribera del Duero is characterised by a largely flat, rocky terrian. Home to the world-famous and highly-prized Vega-Sicilia and Tinto Pesquera wines, the region is dedicated almost entirely to the production of the Tempranillo grape.
Spain is one of the world's most diverse – and most quickly developing – wine regions. With a rich history of wine production dating back to the time of the Romans, Spain has moved on from being regarded as a source of inexpensive red wine to one which competes amongst the world's top wine regions.
