Giacomo Borgogno e Figli

Considered perhaps the most ancient producer in all of Langhe and Barolo, the Borgogno estate dates back to 1761. While crafting some of the finest and most impressive wines in the region, this historic Piedmont house still strives to represent the traditional style of Barolo winemaking. Along with maintaining this connection to their long heritage, Borgogno have also embraced certain aspects of modern production techniques, including vinifying each vineyard parcel in individual, small, stainless steel tanks. This provides the winemaking team with the ability to closely monitor the transformation of the delicate Nebbiolo grapes and ensure that they retain their variety characteristics while simultaneously preserving the unique identities of the region’s separate terroirs. After vinification, each of the prestigious cru parcels (taken from some of the area’s finest vineyards) are blended together to create the final cuvée, thereby producing a more complete and harmonious wine (as is the case with the Riserva). Although blending is the traditional method here, Borgogno also now produce single vineyard crus, taken from the prized vineyards of Cannubi, Cannubi Boschis, Brunate, Rue, and the monopole Liste.

Along with having one of the oldest and largest cellars in Barolo, Borgogno are also famous for preserving one of the most extensive libraries of back vintages, with massive vaults of ancient bottles all perfectly stored in their cellars. Predominantly consisting of the best vintages, Borgogno will only release these wines following considerable aging, generally after more than two decades has passed. This distinctive practice allows Barolo lovers the rare opportunity to experience some of the region’s most notable vintages, while remaining confident that the conditions under which these wines have been held has been nothing short of perfect.
