Serafini & Vidotto is a brand new producer for AWC. We tasted their wines for the first time at the 2014 edition of VinItaly and they provided perhaps the biggest and most pleasant surprises of anything we sampled. Il Rosso dell’Abazia is winemaker Francesco Serafini’s flagship cuvée, a Bordeaux blend from the Treviso region of north-eastern Italy in the shadow of the Dolomites. Francesco is both a literal and figurative poet and this shows through in the wine – it really is poetry in a glass, each sip imbued with an uncommon breadth of flamboyantly expressive flavours and carefully crafted nuance.
Founded in 1986 by Francesco the oenologist and Antonello Vidotto the farmer, the pair are dedicated to organic wine-making, intelligent viticulture and ultimately respecting the individual characteristics of each grape variety.
Their high density but low yielding vineyards are predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot with another vineyard exclusively producing Prosecco. Francesco has made it his goal to show that his premium Bordeaux blend can compete with any other wine produced anywhere in the world and the quality of his wines is now a direct result of the strict procedures that he and Antonello maintain in the vineyards - each vine will only produce a single bottle of wine in any given vintage.
